GC-Memo 2008

Governing Council of the University of Toronto

2008 Board and Committee Selection

Welcome

Each year, members of the Governing Council are asked to indicate which Boards and Committees they would like to serve on in the coming year.
Please complete the online Board and Committee Selection Form indicating the Committees and/or Boards on which you would like to serve in 2008-09, keeping in mind the following guidelines:

  • Normally, members serve on no more than two Boards or standing committees, including the Executive Committee.
  • Members of the Executive Committee are nominated by the various estates on Governing Council, and members will be notified separately on the nomination process for these seats.
  • Members who wish to serve on only one Board or standing committee should so indicate, but should still list more than one choice, in order of preference.
  • Chairs of Boards are not normally expected to undertake any other Governing Council Committee assignments.
  • Members of the Academic Board may be asked to undertake at least one Committee assignment.
  • You need not be a member of a Board to be a member of one of its Committees. (The exception to this rule is the Agenda Committee of the Academic Board.)
  • Members interested in serving on the Committee for Honorary Degrees should so indicate but should be aware that assignment to the Committee may be in addition to service on two standing Committees or Boards.
  • The Elections Committee meets at least twice between September and November to develop the Election Guidelines for the election of administrative staff, teaching staff and students to the Governing Council. The Committee may also meet as Election Overseers between February and April to hear appeals concerning the election process.
  • Teaching Staff and Student Governors will automatically be assigned to the Academic Appeals Committee. Governors from other constituencies are welcome to select the Academic Appeals Committee if they are interested in participating in the Committee's policy meetings. The Academic Appeals Committee meets when there is an appeal to be heard or a policy issue to be considered.
  • There are about 7 meetings of Committees, Boards and Governing Council each year, from September to June. The 2008-09 meeting schedule is currently being developed and will be approved by the Governing Council. The dates and times for the 2007-08 meeting schedule may be viewed here.

If you have no strong preference regarding which Board(s) or Committee(s) on which you would like to serve and if you do not provide a ranking, the Chair will recommend your assignment(s) after trying to accommodate individuals who have ranked their preferences.

Information on the various Boards and Committees, including the various Terms of Reference and the distribution of seats, is available online here.

Thank you.
